Surfing in Scarborough - Watersports in the Yorkshire Moors and Coast

Canoeing, Diving, Sailing and Surfing - the Yorkshire Moors and Coast has plenty of water based activities for all abilities.  Most people forget that the North York Moors has a coastline, and what a coastline!  The North Sea has much to offer, including some great surfing.  For those who prefer the contained waters of lakes, there are also a few of those to splash around in.

Surfing in the Scarborough area

There are a wide variety of beaches in the Scarborough area from the mellow waves of South Bay to the steeper faster waves of Cayton Bay and North Bay.  South Bay is ideal for longboard surfers and intermediates with easy access and gentle rolling waves. There is surf hire and lessons available at the Spa Complex from the local surf shop and cafe's for food and drinks to help you regain your strength afterwards.  There are few rocks and normally only gentle currents.  There is ample parking and town is only a few minutes walk away. There can be good waves at any stage of the tide.

North Bay is only a short drive from South Bay and the waves there are often a little bigger and more powerful.  It is a favourite with travelling shortboard surfers and longboarders alike. There is parking all around the marine drive and there are a number of access points to the beach. The waves are best from mid to low tide.

Cayton Bay is a few miles south of Scarborough.  There is a car park and surfshop at the cliff top. Cayton is a beautiful bay and is often very full of surfers. At high tide the waves can be very powerful and fast with strong currents so caution is advised. The waves are best from mid to high tide.

Before surfing always check surf and wind conditions. Never surf alone.  Surf checks and advice on where to surf will happily be given by FluidConcept Surf shop and surf School.

For the adventurous there are hundreds of waves on the Yorkshire coast to suit all abilities, all it takes to find them is an OS map and a bit of experience.
