Walks around Whitby

Whitby is a railway terminus with services north to Battersby and Middlesbrough. It has also services by bus locally to Sleights, Sandsend, Robin Hood's Bay and Thorpe; and district connections (1) to Pickering and Malton; (2) by the moors to Middlesbrough; (3) by the coast to Middlesbrough; and (4) to Scarborough. Further connections are given from the places named.

It is suggested that visitors using this information should make themselves acquainted with these transport services. In many cases, they make it possible to shorten the walking distances given on the routes indicated. A map of the district will also be of considerable assistance.

  • By St Hilda's Terrace, Stakesby Road, Westbourne Road and across the fields to Ewe Cote. Return by road or proceed to Fern Hill and Newholm turning right for coast return or left by road. (6 miles).

  • Whitby Bridge, turn right down Church Street and along Larpool Lane to Ruswarp. Continue either by road or field path centred in Ruswarp Village. (3 miles)

  • As in Walk 2, turning left along pathway on left halfway down steep hill (Danger Bank), leading to Glen Esk. Follow path either through woods to Sneaton or by streamside to Golden Grove and Rigg Mills. Return by Sneaton or Hawsker. (7 miles).

  • Through Ruswarp Village by riverside to Briggswath. Follow rise to new road for circuit return by the right (6 miles); or cross river and railway, offering choice of walk through Sleights, turning left just below church for Iburndale and left again by stream side to Briggswath and bus, train (Sleights Station) or walk: or up the hill at Iburndale to Ugglebarnby and Sneaton, turning left for Ruswarp. (Full round 9 miles)

  • By Bridge and Church Street and direct road to Hawsker, returning through village, taking road to the right past the church and proceeding to the town via the Abbey and Parish Church Steps. (6 miles)

  • St Hilda's Terrace and Upgang Lane to Sandsend, returning by beach. (NOTE: a beach walk is best undertaken when the tide is on the ebb.) An alternative return is by Eastrow, Raven Hill and field paths through Raithwaite, Moss Brow and Straggleton.

  • High Lighthouse along East Cliff (2 miles). Return by Hawsker Road.

  • Robin Hood's Bay along East Cliff via Saltwick Bay and cliff footpath (7 miles). Return by road; bus is available.

  • Robin Hood's Bay by the moors. Follow Scarborough road beyond Hawsker for about six miles to signpost on left. Take road leading by Park Gate through Thorpe to Robin Hood's Bay (8½ miles). Return by road or bus.

  • Mulgrave Woods, Old Castle and the Lodge, via Sandsend and Lythe Bank (entrance 3½ miles). Return by various routes. Open Sundays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. (NOTE: Mulgrave Woods closed during the month of May).

  • Sandsend and Lythe to East Barnby Lane (on coast bus route). Down lane to Barnby Becks. Option turn left to Ugthorpe (8 miles from Whitby) or cross Becks and by Hutton Mulgrave moor to Skelder (3 miles from Becks) and Guisborough Road.

  • Runswick Bay by Sandsend and Kettleness cliff paths (8 miles). Continuing to Staithes (additional 3 miles). Alternative return from Runswick Bay by Hinderwell (1 mile). Bus available.

  • Ugthorpe (8 miles on Guisborough road) or by bus to Ugthorpe Lane end on A171. Return through village and Lythe.

  • Dunsley, via Guisborough road - either direct road or by either of two paths or road circuits about half a mile and three quarters of a mile further along main road. Return by Sandsend. (Full circuit 7½ miles).

  • Carr Hill, via Guisborough road then turn left after two miles on Pickering Road (Carr Hill Lane) proceeding by new road to Sleights or turn into narrow lane on left and into fields halfway down hill and return by Lambert Hill Farm and Ruswarp. (5 miles).

  • Aislaby by Guisborough road (3 miles). Return by road near church to moors to regain road, or by Sleights, reached by Featherbed Lane and fields or via Woodlands Road.

  • Aislaby, as Walk 16, continuing by road to Egton (7 miles). Return by Guisborough road or to valley by Egton Bridge and Grosmont.

  • Grosmont via Sleights. Alternative routes by Eskdaleside or by Blue Bank and moor road, to sign post on right (8 miles). Alternative return by Newbiggin and Woodlands to Sleights or Aislaby.

  • Sneaton Thorpe, via Sneaton, turning left a little over half a mile past village and continuing walk to Hawsker or through Rigg Mill and Cock Mill. (8½ miles).

  • Littlebeck and Falling Foss via Sleights and Blue Bank (7 miles). Return by field paths to Iburndale; then as in Walk 4; or by road via Hempsyke, Dean Hall, Ugglebarnby and Sleights; or by Sneaton and Ruswarp.

  • Falling Foss by Scarborough bus to Red Gate, turning right over moor to Foss and back through Littlebeck and by routes given in Walk 20.

  • Ramsdale Woods (8 miles) by Scarborough bus to St. Ives Farm. Turn left by path to Ramsdale Mill thence by the right to Park Gate, Thorpe and Robin Hood's Bay.

  • Fyling Hall, by Scarborough bus to Evan Howe (7½ miles). Proceed left by Kale Croft (Calcroft) by Fyling Hall Station (disused); thence direct to beach at Mill Beck and forward to Robin Hood's Bay (4½ miles) or over beck to Middlewood and Thorpe (3½ miles).

  • Maybecks, by Scarborough bus to Red Gate and on left side of wall (2 miles), path to Falling Foss (¾ mile). Return as walk 20.

  • Ellerby by coast road (7½ miles). To Runswick Bay (1½ miles); by fields and road to Ugthorpe (1½ miles) and Lythe; or through Ugthorpe to Guisborough Road (4 miles).

  • Kettleness (7½ miles). Via Lythe, turning right at East Barnby Lane end; through Goldsborough and by fields via Scratch Alley (scene of discovery of Roman remains). Return by cliff path to Sandsend.

  • Mickleby (coast bus to Lane End, 7½ miles). Return by fields to West Barnby and Lythe Road, or by Ugthorpe to Guisborough Road.

  • Roxby by bus to Roxby Lane end on A171. Through village two miles. Return by Borrowby and Newton Mulgrave to Hinderwell; or by road to Dale House and Staithes (3 miles). To Whitby by bus.

  • Ridge Lane (moor bus 11 miles) by road to Staithes (5 miles).

  • Glaisdale (9 miles). Guisborough moor road, or bus, to Egton Lane end, thence by road to Egton, turning right at entrance to village and by road and Limber Hill. Return by rail or walk through Arncliffe Woods on right-hand side of stream to Egton Bridge Station or further to Grosmont Station.

  • Lealholm. Bus over Guisborough Moor (7 miles) and by road to Stonegate and Lealholm side to village (3 miles). Return by direct rail or road to Glaisdale Station (3 miles); with alternative of walking Houlsyke to Danby Station (3½ miles).

  • Fryup, reached from Lealholm Station (4 miles); by path from the Green, Glaisdale; or by Glaisdale Head (5 miles); return from Danby Station (4 miles).

  • Danby by moor bus (12 miles) turning left for road to village (3 miles) or to Castleton (4 miles).

  • Goathland, via Sleights and Blue Bank (9 miles). Several attractive walks radiate from Goathland, including Beckhole to Thomasin Foss, Water Ark, Walker Mill Foss and Darnholme; Mallyan Spout to Beckhole; via Beckhole to Green End and Grosmont; Goathland to Egton Bridge via Randymere (Whitby reservoir); Goathland to Nelly Ayre Foss. The Roman Road (exposed for about a mile and a half) is on Wheeldale Moor.

  • Saltersgate, 12½ miles on Pickering bus route. Moorland walk to Levisham (5 miles). Alternative return by Ellerbeck and Goathland; or by Ellerbeck and Brocka Beck to Sleights and Whitby.
