Unspoilt
With a National Park and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty within its borders, there are large expanses of wild and untouched terrain in the Yorkshire Moors and Coast.Forty miles of stunning and varied coastline frame the eastern edge with soaring cliffs, sheltered bays and endless sandy beaches. The vibrant coastal towns still owe more than a passing nod to their origins such as the graceful Edwardian Crescent in Filey, the majestic Victorian Spa complex in Scarborough and Whitby's cobbled streets.
The North York Moors National Park has the largest expanse of heather moorland in England and is a haven for all sorts of plants and wildlife. Nestled in the river valleys that cut through the moorland are stone built villages that contain a great variety of unique and independent shops selling locally produced food and gifts.
Scenery of a different kind can be found in the Howardian Hills, an area designated as one of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Far reaching views of soft, rolling hills are home to large country houses with their beautifully designed parkland. There is also the hidden gem of the Yorkshire Wolds with its peaceful lanes and wildflower meadows.
To make sure you tread gently through this beautiful landscape why not give the car a break and travel around on board the North Yorkshire Moors heritage steam railway, by bike or hop on Moorsbus, a network of buses linking the main towns in the area with the attractions and countryside of the North York Moors.
