Great AytonGreat Ayton

Situated at the foot of the Cleveland Hills, Great Ayton is an attractive village with two centres, High and Low Green linked by the River Leven.

Much of Great Ayton is now a conservation area, with the River Leven flowing through the village linking the spacious greens of High Green and Low Green. In the 18th and 19th Centuries, however, it was home to much industrial activity - weaving, tanning, brewing and tile making. Explore the village and surrounding countryside and trace the history of the great explorer Captain James Cook's family connections with Great Ayton.
